![]() However, it is unclear if Tan’s blending of various images and perspectives provides sufficient tokens for the viewer to construct anything less than a subjective point of view. ![]() ![]() In … ontrast to the young man in Joyce’s novel, who finds his identity by unfettering himself with great difficulty from his social ties, Tan’s approach is more objective she seems to open the space for the viewer to define her identity. The use of reflections, duplication of the images, appears to express the complicated nature of her identity. It seems that Tan is seeking for her identity by showing herself from three different perspectives: herself, the camera, and through the reflections on the plate. In this installation, a little monitor shows a sequence of short-cut images of the artist herself on a reflective metal plate, which also mirrors the images on the monitor. The artist’s interest in issues of identity are influenced, to a great extent, by her complex personal background. This video installation, the title of which originates from the biographical novel by James Joyce ‘A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man’, deals with identity - a recurring theme in Tan’s works. ![]()
